Embarking on a mobile-first approach

Updated: Oct 25, 2021

The current version of Sagittly is only available as a web application (1*). When we started on Sagittly slightly over 18 months ago, we chose to go with the web application route as then it was accessed to be the more economically viable option to create a minimum viable product (MVP). This MVP would allow us to test the product with enough features to attract early-adopter customers and validate the product's idea early in the product development cycle. Since the release, we have collected a number of valuable user feedback, some of which we have implemented into the current version of the web app. Collectively the feedback has pivoted our direction towards the mobile-first approach.

What is a mobile-first approach?

The benefits of being mobile-first from a development stance, it will provide the flexibility to scale up rather than scale down. For example, when you start designing for a desktop platform, there is a lot more real estate to take advantage of. The core design elements on the desktop platform maybe providing a really great user experience. However, when this design needs to be adapted for mobile, you realize that none of the technology that makes the desktop user experience great can be scaled down to be adapted to mobile with the same user experience. This is the reason why at the moment we do not have a mobile app with the story treatment features.

What is a Mobile app?

Contrary to applications designed for desktop computers, mobile applications move away from integrated software systems. Instead, each mobile app provides an isolated and focused functionality. For example, it can be a game, a calculator, or a mobile web browser.

Such a mobile app will be useful for our users because as a productivity app they are prone to be using their smartphones and tablets to perform many complex tasks on the go like updating their story treatment ideas, responding to comments, or creating new tasks.

Mobile app statistics

Whether it’s browsing the internet on the train in the morning, checking your emails while waiting for an appointment, or listening to music at the gym, cell phones are deeply embedded in our daily routines. It’s no surprise that we spent an average of 4 hours a day on our mobile phones mainly attributed to application use.

  • Mobile apps are expected to generate over $935 billion in revenue by 2023.

  • The Apple App Store has 1.96 million apps available for download.

  • There are 2.87 million apps available for download on the Google Play Store.

  • 21% of Millennials open an app 50+ times per day.

  • 49% of people open an app 11+ times each day.

  • 69% of all US digital media time comes from mobile apps.

  • The average smartphone owner uses 10 apps per day and 30 apps each month.

Conclusion

We are confident to proclaim that we as a company have decided to embrace the mobile-first approach for all of our business endeavors moving forward. This will allow us to create an exceptional user experience that caters to mobile users. We are confident that once we attract and convert mobile users to our product, the users of other devices would certainly follow. Finally, this move will guide us towards our goal of ensuring that our users be always able to collaborate and analyze their projects in a manner that is most convenient and timely.
